Women Empowerment- it's everyone's business!
Why Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
International women’s day is a day of celebration and reflection on progress made to promote and protect women’s equality and human rights. Young adults are part of the Generation Equality capable of bringing together people: of every gender, age, ethnicity, race, religion and country, to collectively contribute for everyone to have the same opportunity they deserve.
A gender-equal society is one in which women feel empowered so that intelligent minds participate in a societal project that holds tremendous potentials. Individual rights need to be upheld by society to reduce gender-based violence that has ripple effects in communities.
Women in the Workplace
In the workplace, studies demonstrate that companies with higher gender and racial diversity financially outperform their peers. Cultural changes are paramount to decrease discrimination. Involving male co-workers in sensitization training about gender gaps has shown promising results: changes happened more than 90% of the time, because it is a conversation that involves all. There are also several ways for women to empower themselves: standing up for your right or that of another woman can create change. We need to promptly intervene when we identify that another person suffers marginalisation and voice out support for them. It is encouraging that this is increasingly more recurrent.
COVID-19 and Professional Femmes
The pandemic has unfortunately threatened prospects of gender equality. Perhaps, it has been the right context to expose the fragilities of our current system. Research shows that women are 1.8 times more likely to be impacted by COVID-19 because they are the majority of part-time job holders. However, it can also be the right opportunity to implement that culture shift that needs to occur.

The Real Story of an empowered woman
Laura Cha, CEO of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX).
Laura is a woman who believes that being a responsible leader is about promoting inclusion and diversity across her organization and more so in leadership positions. She says that education is primordial to overcome unconscious bias in the workplace, which will drive opportunity. As a woman in a position of power, she understands more than anyone the challenges women face, so she also advocates around companies that the HKEX regulates to encourage improved diversity.
3 Amazing Ways to Celebrate
The 8th of March is a celebration, so you should mark the occasion by doing something special. Here are 3 ideas of what to do.
1. Virtual Protest
Take a photo of you posing with a raised hand and post it to social media, using the hashtags #IWD2021 and #ChoosetoChallenge. It signifies your choice to commit to the challenge of inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes, and cooperate in the building of an inclusive society. Even better, make it a group activity with your co-workers to raise awareness.
2. Treat Yourself and Dress Up
There is not a better motivator for you, than yourself. During this special occasion, it is important to be grateful for, and proud of your own achievements. Women are pushed to sometimes have the tendency to be overly critical of themselves. So, it is a great way to emancipate from these unnecessary hurdles. So treat yourself to a superb outfit and feel amazing!
We recommend for this day to wear a statement piece like the Hero Blazer.
